I was getting an eye exam a few years back, and the optometrist, in the uncomfortably quiet office, was peering into my eye with a microscopic instrument for what seemed to be a very long minute. "Can you see my soul?" I asked.
We didn't see eye-to eye on a sense of humor, but it made me think about shutter speeds of our captured experiences...the images that make us look twice or think again and touch us in so many ways, framing our perceptions and memories of lifetimes.
When I was a young mother, I didn't have the instrumentation available to me for capturing the instant, animated moments that swirled throughout the growing years, but would often pause for a still moment, just to let my heart soak in the wonder-filled gifts and familiar surprises. I sometimes recall images and try to translate them into words.
I am also joyfully reminded, via iphone snapshots, Skype and Flip videos, shared with me by my grown children and some of their friends that grew up alongside mine, that their techno-captured world is an animated exhibit, dancing amidst the still life, upon the window-sill life, looking through the transparency of Soul.
